As an artist, Dustin Pickering (poet, author and narrator) is fascinated by the cathartic powers of love as a universal expression of the finest beauty.
In this presentation ‘Love Pirate’, Frédéric Iriarte (composer and visual artist) and Dustin Pickering delve into this topic of love’s ancient power to bind and loosen energies.
As a pirate the speaker is on a quest, sometimes finding himself where he is not wanted.
Musically, the project reflects the atmosphere of gentle water and singing birds. Even a passing train makes the rounds in the array of sounds.
Frédéric Iriarte approached Dustin Pickering for collaboration and Dustin chose recent poems, including “Calhoun”, a poem named after research scientist John B. Calhoun.
The poem reflects an environment of decadence that collapses and a social order of callous self-interest. Human relationships fall into the “behavioral sink” while the best among us isolate.
He also embrace my own illness in “Depression” which is part of my ongoing mental health struggle.
Each poem and its accompanying musical rendition present thoughtful and engaging dialogue with the contemporary need of each of us to heal internally.
